Why am I Here?
There are no greater nor more profound questions that anyone may ask concerning himself. One may be interested in the structure of the atom, or flight into space, or the cure of cancer. As profitable as the answers to such questions may be, yet they are of no help when it comes to answering these others which concern us most. Answer all other questions and leave these unanswered and how great is that darkness. It is neglect to find the answers to these questions which leads to sorrow, frustration of spirit, disappointment, suicide.
These questions come to every one of us; and strange as it may seem, how many there are who instead of trying to seek out the answers, seek to snuff them out and forget them. Yet the questions still stand. The matter is personal. It can’t be avoided. Eternity hangs in the balance. Science has no answer, biology has no answer, psychiatry has no answer, evolution has no answer. Man in himself has no answer and never will have.
Only God has the answer, and He came down to earth in the Person of His Son that we might know. It is Jesus Christ who is the “Light of the World.’’ As He said, “He that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” John 8:12.
How earnest are you to really know the answers, rather than to slip off into utter darkness? You have heard about Jesus Christ. Have you ever cared enough about Him to read the story of His life when He was here among men? You will find it in the first four books of the New Testament. You can read any one of them in a little over an hour. It is well worthwhile to look into.
Here is One who was prophesied of hundreds of years before His birth. He was born in a stable over 2000 years ago, and was a carpenter by trade. The last three years of His life He spent teaching and going about doing good. He never wrote a book. He didn’t have to. He said He and the Father were one. (John 10:30). He was God “manifest in the flesh.” I Timothy 3:16. He came “to give His life a ransom for many,” Matthew 20:28, and accordingly shed His blood on the cross. The third day He rose from the dead, “declared to be the Son of God with power.” Romans 1:4. He is “alive for evermore” Revelation 1:18; “the same yesterday, and to day and for ever.” Hebrews 13:8.
He is either the Light of the World, or else the greatest deceiver who ever joined human ranks. Yet ten thousand times ten thousands of thousands have opened the doors of their heart to let His light shine in, and have come out of darkness into His marvelous light. No one has so influenced art, literature, music, and the whole moral order as He has. Yet men and nations still shut Him out. When that happens, nothing but darkness and despair remain.
He came into this sinful world to scatter the darkness, and blessings abound wherever He reigns, whether in groups of people or in individual hearts. Jesus Christ shall reign: and all who choose darkness rather than light will go out into outer darkness forever and ever. (Matthew 22:13).
Let Him in! He says: “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me.” Revelation 3:20. He says, “Him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out.” John 6:37. “The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin.” I John 1:7.
Pray! Read your Bible!
Turn on the Light! Let Him in!
We are here to glorify God (Daniel 5:23) and to know the joy of His fellowship.
We came from Him. (Acts 17:28). He made us for Himself, and we shall never rest until we rest in Him. We are either going to a place to be forever with Him, or forever without Him. The one is Heaven, the other is Hell. This life is man’s probation. We are here that we might choose “to become the sons of God.” John 1:12. That’s what it’s all about, and our choice here determines our destiny.
