There are many different answers. Let’s see what the answer is according to the Bible.

1. Salvation requires Repentance
To repent means that you are sorry enough for your sins to quit them. Many people are sorry they are caught, but not sorry enough to quit.

Jesus spoke about repenting: “Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.” Luke 13:3

Peter preached about repentance: “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the Name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins.” Acts 2:38

John urged repentance: “Repent ye: for the kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” Matthew 3:2

It is the desire of the Lord that all men repent. “The Lord is… longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” II Peter 3:9

2. Salvation requires Receiving
God’s Word says: “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him.” Revelation 3:20

Also the Bible says, “As many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His Name.” John 1:12

By faith you must receive Christ as your Saviour. Since salvation is a gift, you must accept it as such. Read Ephesians 2:8,9

3. Salvation is by Redemption
All are born in sin. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23

But Christ with His blood bought our souls. Jesus said, “This is My blood… which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” Matthew 26:28

The Bible also says, “Who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity.” Titus 2:14

Yes, Jesus Christ gave His life upon the cross to redeem you from sin.

You may think that your sin is too great to be forgiven. But the Bible says, “The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin.” I John 1:7

Regardless of your past, He is able and anxious to take away all sin.

4. Salvation brings Re-creation
The Bible says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” II Corinthians 5:17

You have new desires, new actions, new life, and new thoughts. The Bible tells us in Ezekiel 36:26 that He gives us a new heart and a new spirit.

Some people try to reform in their own strength. Seek Christ as your Saviour, and He will transform you. He will take away sinful desires and create in you a new heart. Give Him the control of your life.
