The Amazing Sign of the End
Startling things are happening in our generation. The drama of history is unfolding before our very eyes.
The stage is being set for the end of the age. Like the rolling breakers, as a new big wave of world history breaks upon the shore of time, all stand aghast and say, “Is this it?” But then it rolls back and we are at ease again for a few months. But we are very near Full Tide!
One of the things that has been missing from the setting of the world’s stage until several decades ago has been the Jewish nation. But now the miracle has happened. Millions of Jews from over 70 countries have poured into Israel. This little nation has been suddenly reborn, surrounded by enemies. And today the stage is fast being set for the great battle of the age and in the midst of it is this tiny, struggling nation.
You and I know that all over the world there is an expectation. And you ask, “How near is the end?” I think I can tell you. When the Lord Jesus was speaking of the end of the age He said: “Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. Verily I say unto you, THIS generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and hour knoweth no man . . . but my Father only” Matthew 24:32-36. I sincerely believe that the budding of the fig tree speaks of the coming to life of the new nation, Israel, and the generation referred to by Jesus is THIS generation living on the earth when Israel is reborn. Therefore, it very probably could be that the end of this age may come upon us in the next few years.
I can’t bear to think of it, but one of these days there is going to be a cry filling this poor old world. It will come in the underworld. It will come in the world of society. It will come everywhere. “The harvest is past, the summer is ended and we are not saved.” Yes, it is coming! It is the night of judgment and if you’re without Christ this judgment is for you.
This I say to you, if you don’t want to enjoy God’s salvation, you’d better indulge in your old sins—in gambling, in seeing life, in your lust and selfishness, for there is going to be eternal judgment. If you enjoy such things, make the most of them while you can. After Jesus comes for His blood-bought people I don’t want to be in this old world. In the book of Revelation (chapter 6, verse 8) we’re told that one-quarter of the world population is to be wiped out. I don’t know if God is going to allow the use of the nuclear bomb, but that’s what the Bible says. And one-third of all the ships will be destroyed (Revelation 8:9). God’s judgments will fall!
You can call me an escapist, a coward or anything you like—but I don’t care. I don’t want to be here, and oh, I plead with you to listen to the claims of Christ on your never-dying soul! The living Lord Jesus is still pleading with you. He says in Matthew 11:28: “Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Christ alone can and will give you joy, power, peace and the gift of everlasting life.
It is not easy to be a real Christian. You must face it bravely. But while the living Saviour who bore all your sins on the cross still holds open His loving arms, why not receive Him? “As many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name” John 1:12.
Now the hope of every Christian is to see the Lord. We have never seen Him with these eyes of ours — but we are going to see Him face to face. It may be today or tonight. Oh, Christian, put on the armor of God afresh! Get in the battle and work for Him. I beg of you, make the moments count — do business for Christ now. One well done from His lips will make every sacrifice worth while.
