Suicide - Its Cause and its Cure

Suicide - Its Cause and its Cure

“CAN you please help me? I don’t want to live, but I don’t want to die either.” The person who asked my friend this question is not the only one who has wanted to take their own life. Recent studies have found that 18-20 teenagers a day in North America commit suicide. And another 1000 attempt to - each day! The causes of suicide are many!

Our bank accounts are filled with money, our houses are filled with furniture, our minds are filled with knowledge, and our nation is filled with churches, but our souls are empty! Wealth, fame and pleasures are not enough to satisfy the human soul. Our souls were created for something more. Our souls were created for God, and until we find Him, this gnawing sense of emptiness will never come to an end.

Through Jesus Christ, who has been raised from the dead, your soul can find fulfillment. Jesus said, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” John 10:10. The Bible says that when you repent and receive Christ you can be filled with the “fullness of God.”

Psychologists today are linking many of our actions, and reactions, directly to our sense of self-esteem – the way we feel about ourselves. Many suicide notes expose a total loss of a healthy sense of self-worth which every person needs. With the terrifying increase of abuse - physical, mental, emotional, sexual, - in many homes today, many teens graduate with high marks, but zero self-worth. Your ultimate worth cannot be found in your physical appearance, status in society, or material possessions; your worth is expressed at the cross of Christ when the Son of God gave Himself for you. He died and shed His precious blood that you might not know the torment of life and eternity separated from God.

Loneliness is another reason why people end their life. You can be in a room full of people, full of laughter, and full of entertainment, and still feel lonely. Spiritual loneliness is by far the hardest isolation to face. The Bible says, “Your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid His face from you” Isaiah 59:2.

Jesus experienced the loneliness of separation from God as He cried out from the cross, “My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me?” Matthew 27:46. Christ was forsaken by God for those hours as He took upon Himself our sins and took our judgment that we might be restored to a living relationship with God. To every believer the promise is sure “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” Hebrews 13:5.

Matthew Prior said, “Hope is the dream of a man awake.” The current rise of suicides, especially among teens, has been called the ‘epidemic of despair’! First century Roman tombstones have been unearthed with the inscription, “NO HOPE.” The Bible says, “. . . without Christ,. . . having no hope, and without God in the world.” Ephesians 2:12.

Perhaps the sense of hopelessness and helplessness in your life today comes from your addiction to drugs or alcohol. Perhaps the doctors have diagnosed yourself or that special person you so deeply cherish, with a fatal sickness. As you face death, you realize you have no hope.

For centuries philosophers have spoken of man’s problems, but have not been able to give a solution for them – a clear way out. Socrates himself took his own life.

Jesus said, “I am the way...” John 14:6. Through Christ you can have hope, you can find God, you can have a new life. The Bible speaks of the “living hope” that fills the heart of every Christian “by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” The Bible says this hope is “as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast” Hebrews 6:19. The future of the Christian is thrilling, but the present is filled with a joy and hope and peace which only Christ can give.

It is tragic when a person ends their life. However, it is far worse when a person commits spiritual suicide. You do that by refusing to confess your sin to God and look to Jesus Christ alone to save you and make you His child. The way out of the problem in your life and family is not suicide. You see, without Christ you are already dead! Dead spiritually to God, but not beyond the reach of God’s love, forgiveness, and power through the Lord Jesus Christ who died and rose again. The Bible says, “But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons (children) of God” John 1:12. Receive Christ today and He will make the difference.

IF YOU WANT TO RECEIVE JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR LORD AND SAVIOUR, REPEAT THIS PRAYER: “Dear God, be merciful to me, a sinner. I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God and that He died on the cross so that I might have eternal life. I believe in my heart that God raised Jesus Christ from the dead three days later. Please forgive me Jesus, for every sin that I have ever committed and come into my heart right now to be my personal Saviour, and take full control over my life from now on. I ask this prayer in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen."
