My Chains Fell Off
The writer of this leaflet has been known to carry a gun, lie, cheat, curse, burglarize, get drunk and react violently. He spent almost ten years in three major United States’ prisons: the Federal Penitentiary at Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, for two years; imprisonment in maximum security at Charlestown, Massachusetts, for seven to ten years; finally taken in “chains and irons” to New Hampshire for five to seven years in 1956. Labeled as “unfit ever to return to society”, he was stripped naked and confined in solitary on “bread and water” after he failed to escape over a wall thirty-five feet high. Finally, after years of evil, futility and hopelessness, a “born-again” convert to Christ led this “incorrigible” derelict to a completely new life in Jesus Christ! The man responsible for this was himself a murderer and an outcast from the human race. He is still imprisoned in the State of Massachusetts for life.
Both the “lifer” and I, having put our trust in Christ, found a power above and beyond mankind’s wildest expectation! A power of love, forgiveness and hope. A power of comfort, truth and compassion. Today the writer is attending a Christian college to become a Prison Chaplain. The “lifer” is continuing his missionary work in the prison yard and we are both happy in the knowledge that our trust is in Jesus and not in the constant failures of man.
The amazing thing is that each one of us has a choice. We can continue in a life of materialism and sin, or we can pray in the privacy of our room, car, or wherever we are at the moment, “Lord Jesus, forgive me for I am a sinner. I want to place my trust in Thee and receive eternal life.”
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16.
This is the choice I made. If you have been challenged to make this same choice, do not put it off. Settle it now.
“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” Acts 16:31
