Thank God, I settled it last night!
Two evangelists set up a large tent in a mining town to conduct two weeks of gospel preaching meetings. They went to all the houses to invite everyone to come. Many came to see what it was all about, and so it was that Mr. and Mrs. Tate came to every service. The last evening, during the last service both Mr. and Mrs. Tate gave their hearts to the Lord. They accepted Jesus Christ into their lives and determined to serve Him. They went home rejoicing in their new found salvation.

The next day as usual, William Tate went to work in the mine. A terrible thing happened! The ceiling in the mine caved in, killing 30 men. William Tate was one of them. Just as the ceiling came down he yelled, “Thank God I settled it last night!” Some of the survivors heard what William Tate shouted just before he died. Later, they asked his wife as to what her husband could have meant by that. She told them that she and her husband had committed their lives to the Lord Jesus Christ only the previous evening.

On his tombstone they carved these words: Here Lies the body of William Tate He came to Jesus before it was too late

While my wife was in the hospital dying of cancer, I visited her every day and sometimes twice a day. One day as I walked along the busy hallway to see my wife, there were also other visitors coming and going. The nurses all seemed to be preoccupied with their work. As I was passing many rooms where sick people lay, I heard a woman crying out, “Oh, will someone please show me the way, will someone please show me the way?” She kept repeating those words over and over again. When I got to my wife’s room I told her about the poor woman and that I felt the Lord urging me to visit her.

The next day when I came to see my wife the woman was still crying out, “Will someone please show me the way?” Nobody seemed to be hearing her plea. I went into her room and told her who I was and she introduced herself to me. I asked her how things were going for her. She said, “No good at all, I am dying of cancer and I don’t know where I am going!” I said, “The Bible has the answer for you, would you like to know?” She said, “I sure would!”

Tenderly I asked, “Are you a sinner?” With sadness, almost crying, she answered, “Yes!” As kindly as I could I told her that in I Timothy 1:15 the Bible says that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” I read I Corinthians 15:3 which tells us that Jesus “Christ died for our sins”, and II Peter 3:9 where we have the assurance that God is “not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” I concluded with what God says in Romans 10:13 “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved”, forgiven of all sins.

We must do the calling, and God does the saving. He always has and He always will. I then had a prayer with the lady and left.

The next evening I dropped in to see her. She was a changed person. She said to me, “I did what the Bible told me to do, and it has changed my life completely.” Joyfully she related that she was now ready to go to be with the Lord.

Two weeks after coming to Christ this lady passed away. She is now with the Lord who loved her, who died for her, and who saved her.

That can be your experience too, for the Bible says to all, “Seek ye the Lord while He may be found, call ye upon Him while He is near.” Isaiah 55:6

Will you settle it today? Will you seek the Lord and call upon Him while He is near? Your eternal welfare depends upon your response to Jesus Christ. “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:13
