Do You Need a Friend?
Our lives can be full of so much tragedy, hurt, heartbreak and misery. Yet, even in all of this trouble we can be rich and enjoy our lives. Some people have lost everything inlife, but they have a real Friend who sticks with them. They are rich indeed! Other people do not think they need a friend because they feel they have everything. They say, “I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing… “ Jesus Christ answers them, “And knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked.” Revelations 3:17. They were poor because they only had things. God’s Word clearly tells us, “…beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.” (Luke 12:15). To have neither friends nor things in this life is to be poor indeed.
Many of us can also share accounts of friends who have failed us or let us down when the going got rough. Oh, if only we had a friend who would stick with us no matter what we are facing.
I know of and have met such a Friend and I would like to introduce you to Him. He longs to be your Friend too. How would you like to have a Friend who loves you just as you are? Wouldn’t it be something to have a Friend that you could be completely relaxed with? It is possible because my Friend’s name is the Lord Jesus Christ. He knows you well for He created you. “For by Him (Christ) were all things created… that are in earth.’’ Colossians 1:16. Christ really does want to share in your life.
A hymn writer of bygone days wrote the following words about Jesus Christ and what He meant to him.
I would love to tell you what I think of Jesus,
Since I found in Him a Friend so strong and true,
I would tell you how He changed my life completely,
He did something that no other Friend could do.
No one ever cared for me like Jesus
There’s no other Friend so kind as He,
No one else could take the sin and darkness from me,
Oh how much He cared for me.
Everyday He comes to me with new assurance,
More and more I understand His words of love,
But I’ll never know just why He came to save me
Till someday I see His blessed face above.
Jesus Christ can be this kind of a Friend if you will let Him. Christ stated, ‘’Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.’’ Matthew 11:28.
Why isn’t Jesus Christ everyone’s personal Friend? Jesus Christ knows that we are really like Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde, in that there is so much good and evil in us. Some people bear such terrible consequences for the lives they live. None of us can escape this problem with sin. God has said, "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23. We long with all our hearts to have meaning and purpose in our lives, to have something to really live for. Yet, we are our own worst enemy in that we often drive away those who really love us.
This problem with sin has also affected our relationship with God. We all know that there is a God, and that at the end of our days we will have to stand before Him in Judgment. However, we cannot find Him. We know we cannot make ourselves acceptable to God for we have already sinned and are separated from our Heavenly Father.
My friend, there is a way; there is a remedy. We can find our way back to God, and Jesus Christ is the key. He stated, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.” John 14:6.
Why is Jesus Christ the way back to the Father? Because God sent Him to earth to give His life on the cross as a ransom for us. God’s Word states, “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins (ours), the Just (Himself) for the unjust (ourselves), that He might bring us to God.” I Peter 3:18. The result of Christ’s crucifixion on our behalf is that we can enter into a personal relationship with our Heavenly Father. The Bible says, “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 5:1.
Do you have this peace with God my friend? If not, here is how you may come to know my Friend Jesus personally. God’s Word says, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16. The word BELIEVE here is an action word; it is something we do. We must literally invite Jesus Christ to come into us, seeking forgiveness and a new life with our Heavenly Father through His Son. Jesus said, “Behold, I stand at the door (your life), and knock: if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me.’’ Revelations 3:20. Christ will only come into your life by your personal invitation as you seek forgiveness and a new life with God. Would you like to do this? The following prayer is an example of one you can use as you come to God.
“Dear Heavenly Father. I come to You, confessing that I have sinned and broken your laws. I am sorry for my sin, and believe that Jesus Christ came to earth to die for me and my sin. Please forgive me. I invite You into my life, and give Jesus Christ the right to take control of the rest of my life. Please help me to be what You want me to be. Thank you for saving me and accepting me. I pray this in Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
Will you turn to God today? If you will, Christ has said, ‘’I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee’’ Hebrews 13:5. You will never be lonely again.
